A practical guide to scheduling heat pump hot water around rooftop solar, maintaining temperature safeguards and keeping showers comfortable through a Victorian winter.

Heat Pump Hot Water on Solar: Timers and Winter Settings

There is a useful trick to combining rooftop solar with heat pump hot water: heat the water while the sun is available, then use that stored hot water later.

You do not need everyone in the house to shower at lunchtime.

The details matter, though. A timer cannot create sunshine, an undersized tank cannot cover every household routine, and energy-saving settings must preserve the unit's required temperature and hygiene functions.

The aim is a reliable supply of hot water with more of its electricity coming from your roof.

What the solar system is doing

A heat pump water heater uses electricity to move heat from the surrounding air into water. It is different from a solar thermal hot water system, which collects heat directly from the sun.

With rooftop solar PV, the heat pump uses electricity through your home's electrical system. If solar output covers the household's demand at that moment, it can cover the heat pump too.

If demand is higher, the difference may come from the grid or a home battery, depending on your setup.

The tank stores heated water for later use. That is why scheduling can work well even if the busiest shower time is the following morning. It is thermal storage; it cannot send electricity back to your appliances.

Start with your actual solar pattern

Solar Victoria recommends running a heat pump when rooftop solar generation is strongest. Daytime operation can also benefit from warmer outside air.

Making the most of a new hot water system.

Look at a few representative days in your solar monitoring app. A roof shaded in the morning may have a different useful heating window from an east-facing array.

Check household demand too: a midday peak on the generation graph does not necessarily mean all that output is spare.

An installer might suggest an initial daytime window, then adjust it after checking recovery time and your household's use. Treat “run it between these hours” as a household-specific setting, not a universal rule.

A short summer window may be too restrictive in winter.

Use the right control for the unit

Ask whether your model has an integrated timer and how its operating modes interact. A timer generally permits heating during a window; the thermostat and unit controls determine whether heating is needed.

The machine does not necessarily run continuously throughout that window.

If external timing equipment is proposed, have the installer confirm compatibility and arrange any electrical work. Simply cutting power can interfere with functions that need to remain available.

Use the manufacturer's approved scheduling method and keep the manual with your handover documents.

Keep temperature protection separate from timing

Lowering the stored-water temperature is not the same as moving heating into solar hours.

Victoria's Building and Plumbing Commission explains the distinction between storing water hot enough to manage bacterial growth and reducing the delivery temperature through tempering.

Different approved heat pump designs can manage temperature protection differently. Ask the installer to explain your model's normal setpoint, any sanitation cycle and how that cycle is maintained when a timer is active.

Leave required safety cycles enabled and follow the model's instructions.

Likewise, shower temperature is a plumbing and delivery question, not a reason to experiment with tank settings.

If water seems excessively hot, inconsistent or slow to arrive, describe the symptom to your installer rather than changing several controls at once.

Melbourne winter changes the calculation

Cold air and colder incoming water can make the heating task harder, while shorter days leave less time for solar generation. The government's guide cautions that not every heat pump model is designed for locations regularly below 5°C.

For a Melbourne household, ask about cold-weather recovery time rather than looking only at a headline efficiency figure. Will the tank recover after several morning showers within the intended daytime window?

What happens when visitors stay? Does the model use a separate booster in some conditions, and when?

A sensible winter adjustment might be a longer permitted heating window or a manufacturer-supported boost when demand is unusually high. That can use more grid electricity on some days.

Reliable hot water remains the first requirement; chasing perfect solar coverage can become frustrating if the schedule is too tight.

Coordinate the other big loads

If the dishwasher, EV charger and heat pump all start together, they share the available solar. There may be enough for all three on one afternoon and only one on another.

As an illustrative snapshot, suppose solar is producing 4 kW, the rest of the home needs 1 kW and the heat pump draws 0.8 kW. That leaves 2.2 kW before allowing for other loads.

These are example figures, not specifications for a particular model. Your monitoring data can reveal whether staggering flexible appliances is worthwhile.

Where a home battery is installed, check whether the hot water schedule is unintentionally drawing down stored energy needed later.

Ask for a coordinated plan covering the tank, battery and EV, rather than setting each device independently.

Review the first fortnight

Keep a simple note of shower comfort, heating times and any boosts. Compare several similar days instead of judging the setup from one sunny afternoon.

If hot water runs short, give the installer the household size, shower timing and control settings so the cause can be investigated.
