SA Heat Pump and Air Conditioning Offers: What REPS Can Help With

South Australian heat-pump and air-conditioning offers can involve REPS, but the scheme is not a universal cheque with one fixed value. The available offer depends on the activity, equipment, household and provider.

Before accepting a headline discount, ask which REPS activity is being used and what the installed customer price includes. That makes a provider offer easier to compare with an ordinary quote.

What REPS actually does

The Retailer Energy Productivity Scheme places energy-productivity obligations on relevant retailers. Retailers and activity providers deliver eligible improvements under the scheme.

That structure does not guarantee every household the same appliance, discount or installation date. Contact the provider about its current offer and capacity before treating an advertised promotion as available to you.

If you are comparing heat-pump hot water, start with the household's hot-water needs and the installation site. A supported product still needs to suit the job.

How REPS reaches a household: Scheme: Retailer productivity obligations; Provider: An eligible activity and offer; Household: Confirmed scope and contribution
Planning guide. Confirm the current requirements for your installation.

Hot-water support has a defined activity

The current WH1 water-heater specification sets requirements for eligible replacements and upgrades, including product performance and installation conditions.

It distinguishes building types and circumstances. For example, new Class 1 homes are not treated the same as established Class 1 homes under this activity. Do not infer eligibility just because the address is residential.

Ask the provider to confirm the exact model, existing heater details and applicable pathway. Check whether removal, disposal, plumbing alterations and electrical work are included in the advertised price.

The specification expresses energy-productivity outcomes, not a standard dollar payment to the homeowner. The provider's actual written offer is therefore essential to understanding the financial result.

Air-conditioning offers also depend on the pathway

The HC2A specification covers eligible non-ducted reverse-cycle equipment, with different pathways for new installations and certain replacements.

One pathway for early replacement of a working room air conditioner is restricted to priority-group households. That restriction should not be turned into a claim that every air-conditioning activity has identical household rules.

Ducted and multi-split systems have a separate activity specification. Ask the provider to identify the correct activity rather than applying a single-split promotion to a different system configuration.

For an air-conditioning quote, provide room sizes, existing equipment details and the proposed scope. Scheme eligibility does not replace an assessment of heating and cooling requirements.

Check priority status and the live provider offer

South Australia's priority-group guidance includes specified concession and household circumstances. Ask which evidence the provider needs for the particular activity.

As an example of an actual delivery channel, AGL's South Australian efficiency page describes offers delivered with partners including MAC Trade Services and Ecovantage.

That is a provider example, not a promise of a particular discount from Lightning Energy. Confirm current availability, service area, eligibility and inclusions directly with the provider offering the promotion.

Before accepting an offer: Confirm: Availability and eligibility; Compare: Final installed customer payment; Keep: Written scope and support records
Planning guide. Confirm the current requirements for your installation.

Compare the final installed cost

Request separate lines for the gross price, REPS discount, any federal certificates and customer contribution. Ask whether additional work can change the price after inspection, and how that change will be approved.

Do not count the same incentive twice when comparing packages. A combined quote should explain which benefit relates to which product and who receives any assigned certificates.

If the household also has solar, discuss equipment scheduling separately from rebate eligibility. A timer may help align electricity use with generation, but the outcome depends on the household and system.

Keep the accepted quote, model information, provider eligibility confirmation and compliance documents. These records are useful if an inclusion or support arrangement is unclear after installation.

Contact Lightning Energy to discuss the equipment and installation requirements.

Check any proposed REPS offer against the current activity rules and the provider's written terms before committing. Sources checked 26 October 2026.
