Surveys about planned home-energy upgrades can show interest in lower running costs and more comfortable homes. They do not measure completed installations or money already committed.

How to read an upgrade survey

Check who was surveyed, when the fieldwork took place and how respondents were selected. An average planned budget is different from the amount each household will spend. Extrapolating that average across a population adds further assumptions.

Intentions can also change with household finances, product prices, property moves and the timing of appliance replacement.

Build your own priority list

Start with comfort problems and equipment nearing the end of its life. Compare improvements such as draught sealing or insulation with appliance and energy-system changes. The right order depends on the home.

For each proposed upgrade, record the upfront cost, expected operating change and any other work it depends on. A heat pump or EV charger may involve electrical provisions that are worth planning alongside later upgrades.

Use a budget you can act on

An itemised assessment can distinguish useful work now from options for the future. It should not assume that the average respondent’s budget or motivations apply to you.
