Buying a Battery Yourself: What to Agree with an Installer First

A cheap supply-only battery is only part of the installation cost. Agree compatibility, site work, incentives and service responsibilities before buying.

Buying a Battery Yourself: What to Agree with an Installer First

Before buying a home battery separately, find an installer willing to assess and install that exact equipment. A discounted box does not establish that the product suits your home or that anyone has agreed to commission and support it.

Separate supply can work when responsibilities are clear. It becomes difficult when the battery arrives before the inverter, location, approval and missing components have been assessed.

Get a site assessment before ordering

Ask the electrician to identify the existing supply, solar equipment, switchboard constraints and feasible battery location. Do not describe the supply only from how many switches you can see.

An unusual supply arrangement needs a specific design assessment. There is no useful universal installation price for a battery bought without that information.

Energy Safe Victoria places battery installation and compliance work with the appropriate electrical professionals. Buying the equipment yourself does not make the installation an owner task.

Identify every component

Record the exact battery generation, module count, controller and compatible inverter. Ask whether the delivery includes the required base, communication parts, meters, protection and backup equipment.

A photograph of a complete installed system may show items not included in the supply-only price. Have the installer list what is included, what must be purchased separately and what is unsuitable.

For a hypothetical example, an advertised battery stack might exclude its controller and the compatible hybrid inverter. Adding those costs could erase the apparent saving before labour is considered.

The inverter explainer shows why storage modules cannot be assessed independently of power conversion.

Check provenance, warranty and eligibility

Confirm that the supplied product is intended for Australia, is new where required and has traceable model and serial details. Get written confirmation of the local warranty and the supply channel's responsibilities.

Manufacturer warranty libraries, such as GoodWe's Australian documents, distinguish models and components. Do not assume a warranty found for a similarly named overseas unit covers the equipment offered.

The federal battery program still requires eligible approved equipment and an appropriately accredited installer. A supply-only seller's rebate estimate is not a completed eligibility assessment for your premises.

Ask who will verify the final configuration and handle certificate assignment if a discount is included. Avoid paying a price that depends on support no party has agreed to administer.

Put the installation agreement in writing

Before ordering, agree labour, delivery handling, storage, missing components, required site work and commissioning. Specify what happens if equipment is damaged, incompatible or different from the agreed model.

Clarify who diagnoses a fault and who communicates with the equipment seller or manufacturer.

The installation contractor's workmanship responsibilities and the seller's product responsibilities should be understandable without shifting every problem between them.

Separate the responsibilities. Write down who handles each part of the arrangement.

Do not assume the installer will fund a replacement or provide unlimited return visits for equipment they did not supply. Equally, written commercial terms do not remove applicable consumer guarantees.

Compare the complete result

Use the battery quote checklist to compare a separately supplied arrangement with a supplied-and-installed offer on the same scope.

Include any extra delivery, accessories, approvals, electrical work, inspection and support charges. Compare final payable cost and responsibilities rather than just the equipment price.

If no suitable installer will confirm the proposal, pause the purchase. Paying a deposit on unsuitable hardware can leave fewer options than obtaining an agreed design first.
