Your Solar Installation Handover: What to Check Before Closing the Job

A good solar handover leaves you with a usable system, its records and a clear explanation of anything still outstanding. Panels on the roof are only one part of completion.

Check the installation against the agreed scope without climbing onto the roof or opening electrical enclosures. Technical inspection belongs to appropriately qualified people.

Match what was delivered to what you ordered

Bring the accepted quote, approved variations and equipment schedule together. Confirm panel quantity, exact panel and inverter models, locations and any monitoring accessories included in the price.

Ask the installer to explain substitutions in writing. A similar brand name or advertised wattage does not establish that two products have identical features, warranties or battery compatibility.

For a solar installation, retain the final layout and model details. They make a later warranty enquiry, roof repair or storage assessment much easier than an invoice saying only “solar system”.

Match the delivered system. Use the final agreed scope, including written variations.

Separate the safety record from connection progress

In Victoria, prescribed solar electrical work requires independent inspection. Obtain the completed Certificate of Electrical Safety and clarify any outstanding inspection or rectification items.

Energy Safe Victoria explains certificates and inspection.

An invoice, an app screen and a manufacturer's warranty are different records with different purposes.

Confirm the approved network connection, export setting and meter configuration status. Installation, inspection and retailer paperwork can finish at different times; ask who owns each remaining step.

The Australian Government connection guide describes these separate stages.

Obtain explicit advice from the responsible installer about when the completed system may operate.

If the app shows zero exports, do not assume a defect or a completed connection. Our export-limit guide explains why the approved setting matters.

Four separate milestones. Ask for the status and responsible contact for each.
Conceptual milestones, not a universal sequence or completion deadline.

Make the monitoring demonstration practical

Log into your own account while the installer is available. Check the property name, time zone and equipment shown, and confirm that account recovery goes to an address you control.

Ask which figures are measured. A generation-only system cannot show whole-home consumption accurately without the necessary metering. Missing consumption data is not automatically missing electricity.

Save a first-day screenshot as a reference, not a performance guarantee. Weather and time of day affect output, so a brief commissioning demonstration cannot prove a year's generation.

Where battery storage is included, have the installed operating modes and backed-up circuits explained. An app's backup button is not proof that every household circuit has backup power.

What your app actually measures. Confirm which sensors and features are installed.
An app feature does not establish that the corresponding hardware is installed.

Collect the information needed after the installer leaves

Keep operating and shutdown instructions, warranties, maintenance guidance and the responsible service contact in one folder. Ask for a safe, model-specific explanation rather than a generic online switching sequence.

Solar Victoria's programme audit checklist includes documentation checks. It is written for professional audits of programme installations, not homeowner electrical inspections.

Imagine an otherwise finished job where the owner cannot access monitoring and meter configuration is pending. Write those as two separate items, with a named contact and a promised update date for each.

This is more useful than recording “system unfinished”. The monitoring issue may sit with the installer, while metering involves the electricity retailer and network processes.

Make outstanding work actionable. A short written list beats an ambiguous completion note.

Close the job with a shared record

Photograph accessible equipment labels safely from ground level and retain correspondence. Document property damage, missing accessories or unresolved performance concerns specifically, without attempting repairs yourself.

Do not treat a handover checklist as legal advice about withholding payment. Check the contract and seek consumer advice where completion or payment is disputed.

If everything matches and the remaining processes are documented, you do not need to buy extra monitoring or an inspection package merely to create more paperwork.

For a new installation, ask our team to explain the proposed handover before accepting the quote. Clear completion criteria make both the installation and any later support easier.
