Low solar-panel prices can make headlines, but a panel is only one part of an installed solar system. Inverter selection, mounting, roof access, electrical work, monitoring and commissioning also affect the final quote.

Electricity supply and demand have to remain balanced. As generation changes, networks and system operators need suitable equipment, operating practices and controls. This is more complex than saying that solar is either harmless in every circumstance or responsible for every grid problem.

The April 2025 blackout in Spain and Portugal is an example of why careful attribution matters. ENTSO-E’s final investigation identified interacting problems involving voltage and reactive-power control, oscillations and generator disconnections. That finding does not support a simple claim that excessive rooftop solar caused the event.

What a homeowner should check

Your connection offer sets the permitted export arrangements. The system design should explain how the inverter responds to those limits and how much generation the household is expected to use directly.

Ask for an annual generation estimate with its assumptions, a clear export limit and the exact equipment models. If a battery is proposed, request a separate assessment of the additional cost and benefit instead of assuming storage is essential for every solar installation.
