Reeves Plains Battery: First Equipment Arrives on Site
Alinta reports first equipment deliveries for its 250 MW, four-hour South Australian battery. Construction is still in progress.

Alinta Energy has reported the first battery deliveries for the Reeves Plains project in South Australia. It is a construction milestone for a grid-scale storage development, rather than an announcement that the completed project is already operating.
What has arrived?
In its 16 September 2026 update, Alinta said the first 48 of 194 battery units had begun arriving. The project uses CATL battery equipment and Power Electronics inverters; 89 inverters are planned. The first stage is described as 250 MW with four hours of storage, equivalent to 1,000 MWh at the stated rating.
Alinta describes Reeves Plains as one of South Australia’s largest battery projects. Rankings depend on whether power, energy or project stage is being compared, so a broad “biggest battery” label can mislead.
Why four hours matters
Power describes the rate of output. Stored energy describes how long a battery can sustain a given load. The four-hour description therefore adds useful information beyond the 250 MW headline.
For households, the same distinction helps when reading a battery quote. A higher capacity can support a moderate load for longer, while output limits determine how many appliances can operate together.
Grid storage and home storage serve different needs
Reeves Plains is being developed to participate in the electricity system. It does not provide a dedicated backup circuit to a particular home, nor establish a guaranteed saving on that home’s retail bill.
