Sonnen Australia Enters Administration: What Happens to Your Battery Warranty?
Sonnen Australia has appointed administrators. Here is what battery owners should check about warranties, retailer obligations, existing claims and ongoing support.
Sonnen Australia has appointed administrators. Here is what battery owners should check about warranties, retailer obligations, existing claims and ongoing support.

Sonnen Australia Pty Limited has entered voluntary administration. For households with a sonnenBatterie, the immediate questions are practical: who handles a fault, who pays for repairs, and what happens to the warranty?
There is no basis to tell every owner their warranty is worthless. Equally, the administration notice does not promise that every existing claim will be funded or completed.
Your seller, warranty document and the administrators’ updates all matter.
ASIC’s notice identifies Sonnen Australia Pty Limited, ACN 611 337 547, with Hugh Armenis and Jason Lloyd Porter appointed as administrators on 20 October 2026. The notice was published on 22 October.
The first creditors’ meeting is scheduled for 30 October at 10am Adelaide time (ACDT). Proofs and proxies for creditors wishing to attend are requested by 5pm ACDT on 29 October.
These are meeting requirements, not a universal warranty expiry date.
The notice lists SV Partners contact Stella Norvill, telephone (02) 8986 8986 and Stella.Norvill@svp.com.au. Check the current official notice before sending documents, and ask the administrators which process applies to your situation.

Voluntary administration is a process for assessing a company’s future. It is not the same as a final liquidation outcome. The ACCC explains that an external administrator may seek to rescue, sell or wind down a business.

A written warranty is an additional promise. Australian Consumer Law guarantees are separate rights that cannot be removed by a warranty’s wording.
However, insolvency can affect the practical ability to obtain a remedy from the business involved.
ACCC: warranties and consumer guarantees
The March 2026 Australian sonnenBatterie warranty names sonnen Australia Pty Ltd, ACN 611 337 547, as the warrantor. It describes a term ending at the earlier of ten years or 10,000 complete recharge cycles, starting from commissioning.
That document also promises at least 80% of the stated nominal capacity during the warranty period, subject to its terms. Do not assume this version applies to every older battery: find the warranty supplied with your purchase.
It directs claims first to the authorised partner. Its claim information includes the product, serial number, commissioning date, partner details and problem description.
It also contains reporting deadlines, exclusions and repair-cost provisions.
Read those provisions before approving chargeable work. A warranty claim, a call-out booking and agreement to pay for labour are different things. Ask who has authorised the work and who will pay each cost.
For the broader terms, see our guide to battery warranties, throughput and retained capacity.

If an independent solar retailer sold you the battery, that business is not automatically in administration because Sonnen is. The ACCC says sellers are responsible for resolving consumer-guarantee problems with products they sell.
A seller cannot simply insist that you pursue the manufacturer instead. Explain the fault to the company on your invoice and ask it to assess the remedy. The appropriate outcome depends on the fault and whether it is major or minor.
An installer that only fitted equipment you bought elsewhere has a different role from a retailer that supplied the whole system.
Installation workmanship and a product defect should be identified separately; do not assume every electrician guarantees the battery.
ACCC: who is responsible for repairs, replacements and refunds

Send the administrators your claim reference and supporting records. Ask whether the claim will be handled through ongoing service, a creditor process or another arrangement.
An existing approval email is useful evidence, not proof that payment is guaranteed.
The ACCC warns that unsecured consumers may recover only part of what they are owed, or nothing. A buyer of an insolvent business may not assume all its old liabilities. Wait for written confirmation of any warranty takeover.
For undelivered purchases paid by card or another eligible payment method, ask your financial institution promptly whether a chargeback is available. Time limits apply. Also confirm which company actually received your payment.
ACCC: what to do when a business goes bust

The appointment notice does not establish that installed batteries will stop operating, or guarantee future app, cloud, software and spare-parts support.
Those are separate questions that need specific updates from the service provider and administrators.
Sonnen’s Australian warranty discusses remote software updates and recommends against extended internet disconnection. Do not factory-reset, disconnect or modify a working system simply because of the administration news.
Sonnen’s published contact page directs existing owners to their installer or the app’s Help & Support area. It also lists service@sonnen.com.au and 1300 137 666.
These published channels are not a guarantee of response times during administration.

Sonnen Australia’s published support contacts
If a battery shows a safety fault, follow its documented emergency instructions and seek qualified assistance. Do not open the enclosure or attempt electrical repairs.
A company administration is not itself a diagnosis of a fault in your system.

Administration alone is not a technical reason to replace a working battery. Establish its condition, remaining support options and any actual fault before making a costly decision.
If replacement becomes necessary, compare the complete installation, including inverter compatibility, backup circuits, approvals and removal. A different battery may not be a straightforward swap.
See our checklist for an older battery that has failed before comparing repair and replacement options.
For a proposed replacement, contact Lightning Energy to discuss assessment availability and scope. Bring your existing system documents so compatibility and any additional work can be considered.
Lightning Energy is not the administrator. This article does not offer to assume Sonnen’s warranty liabilities or promise that a claim will succeed. For an individual dispute, contact your state consumer agency or obtain legal advice.
