What Happens If a Blackout Starts During a VPP Battery Event?
A VPP event can use stored energy before a blackout. Check local backup capability, the applicable reserve and communications before relying on it.

If a blackout starts during a virtual power plant event, the useful questions are how much energy remains and whether your installation supports local backup. VPP membership alone does not keep a house powered.
The battery may have been exporting just before the failure. A properly configured backup system must then supply its supported home circuits separately from the failed grid, within its own power and energy limits.
Confirm which circuits and phases are backed up, which gateway or switching equipment is installed, and the permitted simultaneous demand. A grid-connected battery can be installed without the equipment needed for outage supply.
Our blackout backup guide explains why the list of supported loads matters as much as battery capacity.
For Powerwall, Tesla's Australian outage guidance describes how remaining charge, household demand and supported solar generation affect operation. That guidance belongs to the actual configured system, not every battery enrolled in a VPP.

Ask the provider to identify the event reserve in writing. Check whether it follows your app setting, has its own minimum, or changes under specified circumstances. Also ask whether you can increase it before forecast severe weather.
Do not assume an old advertised reserve still governs your account. Tesla says its Energy Plan ended on 30 September 2025. Check your current provider agreement and settings.

A reserve sets aside part of existing capacity. It does not add energy, guarantee that the battery was full before the event, or promise a fixed number of outage hours.
Imagine a hypothetical battery with 10 kWh usable capacity, initially holding 8 kWh. A VPP event exports 3 kWh before the outage. Ignoring losses only to explain the sequence, 5 kWh would remain.
If the supported essential loads averaged 0.5 kW, dividing 5 kWh by 0.5 kW gives ten hours before losses, standby use and operating limits. This is an arithmetic illustration, not a runtime prediction.

A higher load, lower starting charge or unavailable solar would change the result. Turning on a large appliance can also exceed backup power even while substantial stored energy remains.
A blank or stale app screen does not prove that the battery has stopped. Equally, seeing a remembered charge percentage does not prove that the system is currently backing up the home.
Tesla documents local monitoring for supported Powerwalls when internet access is lost. Compatible software, prior phone pairing and access to the same local network are required; some features may be unavailable.

Ask the installer how to recognise backup status using the documented owner controls. Ask the VPP provider how it handles lost communications, incomplete events and later reconciliation of dispatch records.
The VPP overview separates provider control from the battery's physical capabilities.
Arrange a documented explanation of the backup circuits and reserve policy, with the installer handling any commissioning demonstration. Keep the provider's support contact beside the battery service contact.
If reliable supply to essential equipment is the main objective, assess that requirement before joining a dispatch program. Do not trade away a required reserve simply because a reward looks attractive.

A battery design review can compare your desired outage loads with the proposed installation. Medical or other critical equipment needs its own appropriate continuity plan.
