Check an advertised heat pump price for GST, rebate assumptions, installation scope and site extras before comparing it with another offer.

An advertised heat pump price is only comparable when you know which equipment, installation work and incentives it assumes. Ask for the total payable for your property, not just the number beside the product photo.
A low starting price may describe a straightforward replacement for an eligible household. Your home could need a different location, electrical work or plumbing changes, and your rebate position may differ.
Check whether the offer is supply-only or installed, whether GST is included and which model or package it covers. Read the qualifying text at the same time as the headline price.
The ACCC says consumer prices must include taxes and unavoidable charges, with clear and accurate pricing. Ask the business to explain anything that makes the quoted total difficult to identify.

If a site assessment is still required, the uncertainty should be specific. 'Electrical work subject to inspection' is a question to resolve; it is not a finished description of what your household will pay.

Request separate lines for any federal STC discount, VEU discount and Solar Homes rebate. Ask what happens to the total if one eligibility assumption is not met.
Federal certificate rights can be assigned to an agent in exchange for a discount. Once they have been assigned, the owner cannot claim those same certificates again.

Ask whether the price includes the supporting base, plumbing and valves, electrical supply work, old-unit removal, disposal, commissioning and instruction on the controls.
For a gas replacement, identify what happens to the old gas connection. For relocation, identify the new pipe and cable routes. The installer should assess these tasks; the homeowner should receive a clear description.
Also ask who coordinates the licensed trades and supplies the required completion paperwork. A good scope describes the finished result, rather than leaving you to organise missing pieces after delivery.

Imagine two illustrative offers: $2,000 with old-unit removal included, and $1,850 with removal and a new base excluded. The $150 headline difference cannot decide the comparison until those missing tasks are priced.
These are invented numbers, not current market pricing. They demonstrate why equal equipment and equal installation scope need to sit beside each other.
