Flexible Solar Exports: What Changes From a Fixed Export Limit?

Flexible exports allow an eligible solar system's export permission to change with network capacity. They can offer more opportunity than a restrictive fixed limit, but they do not guarantee unrestricted export or a particular bill saving.

Check the option available at your address before selecting equipment. Flexible-export programmes, entry conditions and control requirements differ between distributors and can change over time.

Our export-limit guide explains the connection approval that sits behind either arrangement.

What changes from a fixed limit?

Under a fixed arrangement, the system follows a set export ceiling. Under a flexible arrangement, a compatible control system responds to the allowance supplied through the distributor's operating arrangements.

The solar panels do not become larger when that allowance increases. You can only export electricity that the system generates or otherwise supplies, after household use and within the equipment's own limits.

An opportunity to export more is therefore different from a forecast that more energy will always be available to export.

Fixed and flexible export permission. Both control the power allowed to leave the property.
A larger allowance is an opportunity, not a promise of exported energy.

Check the current local offer

As checked on 13 October 2026, CitiPower and Powercor describe an offer for eligible customers receiving a zero-export pre-approval. United Energy publishes a similar eligible-customer pathway.

CitiPower and Powercor's flexible-export information explains the current offer and required communications.

United Energy's flexible-export page sets out its own customer pathway.

Do not apply those offers automatically to an AusNet or Jemena property. Ask the relevant distributor or installer to confirm the current written choice for your National Metering Identifier.

Check eligibility at the address. A programme in one network is not a statewide entitlement.
Programme details were checked on 22 September 2026 and must be rechecked before purchase.

Our solar team can assess the equipment and design against that choice. A sales promise about future availability is not a substitute for a connection outcome.

Communications form part of the design

The reviewed programmes require a compatible inverter and reliable internet. Multiple-inverter sites can need additional compatible communications equipment to manage exports at the property level.

Ask which equipment carries the communications, who commissions it and who helps restore it after a router or internet change. Confirm any ongoing charges rather than assuming connectivity is cost-free.

Also ask what happens if communication is lost. The applicable fallback limit, delay and recovery process need confirmation in the connection terms and supported equipment documentation.

Prepare for a communications problem. Make the support path clear before commissioning.
No universal fallback limit applies to every distributor or equipment arrangement.

Do not import a fallback number from another state or network. A brief app outage, a failed utility connection and an electrical generation fault are different events, even when their messages look similar.

If you receive a disconnection message, follow the safe customer checks provided by the distributor and manufacturer. Escalate unresolved problems to the installer rather than changing protected settings.

Value the extra exports realistically

Imagine a household with substantial midday surplus and a zero-export offer. A supported flexible connection may allow some of that surplus to leave the property when capacity is available.

Now imagine another household already using most of its daytime generation. A higher export allowance may add less value because there is less surplus available in the first place.

The financial result depends on the additional exported energy, its timing, the retailer's terms and any equipment or service cost. A trial's average experience is not a guarantee for your street or future years.

What is the extra export worth?. Compare the incremental outcome against any added cost.
Neither trial results nor a maximum allowance guarantee future savings.

Our battery value guide provides another comparison point if storage is being considered alongside export changes.

Do not replace a working inverter merely because a higher maximum export number sounds attractive. Model the incremental benefit and confirm that the complete new configuration is approved.

Keep a copy of the offer, compatible-device list and commissioning record. Revisit the plan if the property later gains another inverter or storage system.

Ask us to compare the available connection options using your actual generation, usage and tariff. The useful outcome is a better-supported decision, not the largest advertised ceiling.
