How to disconnect gas after your last gas appliance is gone

Finish a Victorian gas exit by separating appliance decommissioning, the retailer account and the distributor’s disconnection or permanent abolishment work.

How to disconnect gas after your last gas appliance is gone

After the final gas appliance is gone, there is still an account and network process to complete. Capping appliance pipework, closing a retail account and permanently removing a gas connection are different actions.

Contact the gas retailer with the outcome you want, and ask it to confirm the required work and charges in writing. Do not assume the appliance installer has arranged the network job unless that is explicitly in the scope.

Confirm the last appliance has actually been removed safely

Check the property’s appliance list, including cooking, space heating and hot water. In apartments or shared arrangements, establish whether any common service still uses gas.

Have the qualified gasfitter complete the relevant appliance disconnection and make the affected installation safe. Removing a cooktop or water heater does not authorise the household to alter the meter or service pipe.

The government’s electrification guide says ending gas supply requires qualified professionals and a separate retailer process.

For an illustrative home replacing its last gas cooktop, the electrician installing induction and the gasfitter dealing with the appliance connection have defined tasks. Neither task necessarily includes distributor meter work.

Keep the installation records with the whole-home plan, so you can identify what has already been completed and what remains.

Three actions are not interchangeable. Appliance decommissioning: Qualified trade work makes the affected appliance connection safe.; Network service: The distributor completes the agreed connection work.; Retail account: The retailer confirms closure and final billing.
An appliance installer has not arranged network work unless the scope explicitly says so.

Use clear words for the network service you need

Temporary disconnection stops gas delivery while retaining a connection arrangement. Permanent abolishment removes the connection through the distributor’s specified process. Meter removal can form part of different arrangements.

The exact service needs to suit the property. A shared apartment supply can require a different solution from a detached house with its own service.

Australian Government gas disconnection guidance.

Obtain a current written quote for the work and any retailer fees. Ask the retailer to explain what remains physically in place after the proposed service.

Multinet’s current guidance distinguishes disconnection from abolishment and explains the possible work involved.

Multinet’s service definitions and process.

Do not request a vague “gas cancellation” and assume everyone interprets it as permanent removal. State whether you intend a temporary interruption or a permanent exit.

Specify the physical outcome. Temporary disconnection: Confirm the retained arrangement and any future-use conditions.; Permanent abolishment: Request the distributor’s defined permanent-exit service.; Shared property: Check whether common infrastructure changes the available option.
Meter removal alone does not describe every part of the connection arrangement.

Arrange the work through the appropriate account pathway

For an active gas customer, start with the retailer shown on the bill. Confirm the service address, account details, authorised contact and desired outcome.

Multinet directs current account holders through their retailer. It allows some direct requests where there is no active account or the requester is not the current customer, subject to its conditions and documents.

If that exception may apply, check your own distributor’s current instructions. Do not reopen an account or submit duplicate requests merely because another network uses a different process.

Request a reference number, written scope, quoted charges, access requirements and expected completion arrangements. Ask how any final meter reading and retail account closure are coordinated.

Include the exit cost in your electrification budget. It is separate from the installed price of heat pump hot water or another replacement appliance.

Use the right request pathway. Identify the account: Confirm the address, customer and authorised contact.; Agree the service: Record scope, charges, access and reference number.; Coordinate completion: Confirm network work and final account arrangements.
Direct distributor requests are limited and subject to that network’s conditions.

Confirm both the completed work and the final bill

Keep safe access to the meter and service area for authorised personnel. Do not remove a lock, plug, meter or pipe yourself, and do not assume old pipework is safe to disturb.

Ask for confirmation when the requested network service is complete. If the scope changes on site, obtain an explanation of what was done and whether anything remains outstanding.

Check the final retail bill against the agreed closure date, usage and service fees. Ask the retailer when recurring supply charges cease rather than treating zero gas consumption as proof that billing has ended.

Save the closure correspondence and completed-work record with the property documents. If a later bill or query arrives, those records make the requested outcome clear.

Recheck current requirements before acting. This process was reviewed on 27 September 2026; the correct pathway depends on the distributor, account status and property arrangement.

Close out the physical work and the bill. Work completed: Obtain the actual service outcome and any remaining work.; Final bill: Check closure timing, usage and agreed service fees.; Property records: Save the closure and completed-work correspondence.
Zero consumption does not by itself prove recurring supply charges have ended.

If gas removal sits within a broader upgrade, ask us to clarify the appliance-work scope. Arrange and verify the retailer and network steps separately so the project ends with the intended connection and billing outcome.
